It is ok to fail. Really. Don’t listen if someone says otherwise. In fact, I don’t see failure as failure but simply as delayed success. Whether you’re trying to learn a new sport, trying to get into a good school or starting a business, you don’t give up until you succeed. Failure just delays your eventual success, it doesn’t take it away.
Over the years I’ve met many students that fail to get into the school of their choice and then just give up. Others would not compromise on their top choice and keep trying until they get selected. Which path would you choose?
I’ve wanted to do an MBA since 2003. My first 4 attempts at getting started had failed. I didn’t even come to choosing the school, just the admission process itself couldn’t get off the ground. The first time it was due to financial difficulties, I couldn’t do anything about it. The second time in 2005, it was due to high workload and my manager didn’t allow me to study part-time. Leaving job was out of question, so I had to drop my MBA plans. Third time in 2008, recession made the job situation very unstable. The company I was working for went bankrupt and I was jobless.
I hated getting up in the morning and not going to work. So I again had to put my study plans on hold and look for a job. Fourth time in 2010, family problems and the money I had saved for studies, had to be spent somewhere else.
The big moment then came in 2013. I was back in the market looking for a school, latest opportunities, reading reviews, visiting schools; it was fun. And I said to myself, let’s just try, if not this time, there will be a sixth attempt! Fortunately this time, everything just fell in place and I was all set to start my MBA journey in March 2014.
As they say, journey is more important than the destination. For me it’s been a great journey so far, I’m glad I made the decision to continue learning and went on with my 5th attempt.
If you’re going through similar feelings in any of your endeavors, whether it is studies, work or business, just know that you didn’t fail, success just got delayed by one more attempt.
